Similar to a typewriter in the way they work, dot matrix printers have been largely replaced by thermal and inkjet printers since they were first launched in 1957 by IBM. Despite the noise they produce, the low- resolution printing outputs that they generate, and the fact that they are slower than a laser printer, unlike the typewriter they have “survived” and are surprisingly still in demand.
