Print in the Channel - issue #24

EAGLE EYE – BI

POS printers

In issue #21 of Print in the Channel , EAGLE EYE reviewed POS printers and noted how ubiquitous certain technologies seem when you start to pay more attention. However, beyond these over-the-counter receipt printers that you encounter every time you purchase items, some devices are a bit more hidden, albeit in plain sight if you know where to look.

Analyst at Hand

There are a significant number of POS printers with a guide trade price greater than £2,000, which, at that price point are instead referred to as “print engines”. When visiting a train station, for example, and printing a smartcard, a POS print engine will encode it with RFID to contain your personal details for further travel. One example of these “big brothers” of this category is the Zebra ZE511, which can print RAIN RFID labels, tags and cards, and is popular in retail and transportation. Among top selling brands in the POS printer category, Stock in the Channel witnessed healthy search growth averaging at 20.67%, whereas some of the second-tier brands have experienced a shrinkage. Could this point at a few big names like Zebra, Epson, Star Micronics and Honeywell dominating the market, leaving no space for smaller brands to excel? The market overall experienced a shrinkage in stock and a resulting rise in prices, so it remains competitive, although smaller brands need stronger marketing to reach the resellers on Stock in the Channel.
