COMMENT

Reasons to be cheerful There are causes for optimism in the print sector, as new players enter the market, and established brands are innovating to cater for the evolving market and create new opportunities for resellers.

The print sector has endured some tough times in recent years, especially around the pandemic, but there are signs now that the market is on the up. One sign of health is if new brands are entering the marketplace. This month, a new name has entered the multifunction printer (MFP) market – although it is one that is well established in the UK laser printer toner market – Katun. Katun is widening its product portfolio into MFPs and, following a launch earlier in the year, the company has brought its range

Read more about it on p18. The implementation of Natasha’s Law is also providing opportunities to label printer suppliers. While the law has been active for three years, there are some businesses that are not yet fully compliant with it, and others that should upgrade their technology to ensure that they are as efficient and

There are also opportunities to be had by tapping into the sustainability agenda. Many businesses are now judged not just on price and quality but also by how sustainable they are – and this presents opportunities for resellers.

printers, and the company is looking to make a dent in the UK market. Fujifilm of course is known for its printers around the world. Businesses such as these don’t make the commitment to a new market unless they believe there is money to be made. There are also signs that print volumes are starting to increase again as more people return to the office on a regular basis. All this augurs well for the whole sector. Of course, print is a wide topic, and some areas are developing quickly and providing opportunities for resellers such as barcode labelling products. Toshiba Tec has recently

So, considering the new entrants and established players launching new products, as well as the evolving marketplace providing new opportunities, then there are definite grounds for optimism for resellers in the print sector. Epson partnership to reduce ocean transport emissions

Epson has formed a partnership with shipping and logistics company Maersk to use greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduced fuels like biodiesel and green methanol for its inbound ocean transportation to Europe. The collaboration represents the start of a three-year programme to increase the volume of containers transported using GHG emission reduced fuels and marks a significant step towards Epson’s pledge to become carbon negative and underground resource free by 2050. With ECO Delivery Ocean, Maersk offers a product that allows cargo owners to reduce the GHG emissions of their seaborne transports by up to 82% compared to conventional fossil fuel transported containers. As part of its EPSON 25 Renewed initiative, Epson is charting a decarbonisation pathway, with carbon-free logistics a key focus in achieving its aims. In the first year of a three- year programme, the partnership with Maersk is projected to yield savings of 230 tonnes of CO2e emissions. Maersk is a global shipping line and end to end logistics provider committed to achieving net-zero GHG emissions by 2040. The company is at the forefront of sustainability initiatives in the maritime industry, including the deployment of dual fuel-equipped container ships that can sail on green methanol, plus a range of other GHG reducing initiatives in hinterland logistics (e.g. EV trucks, electric trains). “Partnerships are essential in creating impactful solutions for decarbonisation, and our customers are at the core of these partnerships,” said Kaisa Helena Tikk, head of commercial sustainability at A.P. Moller – Maersk. “Our collaboration with Epson is a testament to our shared values and

commitment to reducing the GHG emissions from logistics as fast as we can. Together, we are not only reducing emissions but setting a benchmark for other cargo owners and the shipping and logistics industry.” Mark Robertson, chief supply chain officer, Epson Europe, added: “Epson is committed to driving transformative change in the way we conduct our business. By partnering with Maersk to use emission reduced fuel for our inbound ocean transportation, we are taking a significant step towards achieving our sustainability goals. This initiative not only reduces our carbon footprint but also sets a positive example for the electronics industry. The decision to use emission reduced fuel for inbound ocean transportation, combined with optimising our container space and using advanced tracking software, underscores Epson’s dedication to sustainability and, as one of the world’s leading technology manufacturers, setting better standards for environmental responsibility in logistics.” Epson recognises that the transition to emission reduced fuels, despite initial cost challenges, is vital for reducing GHG emissions in ocean transportation. This partnership with Maersk aims to set a precedent in the electronics sector, where the adoption of biodiesel or green methanol remains relatively rare. In tandem with utilising these GHG emission reduced fuels, Epson is optimising its container space, fitting more than 15% more freight per container through improved logistics and product design. The partnership marks the first stage in a journey towards more sustainable logistics, demonstrating how collaboration can lead to significant environmental impact and inspire others in the industry to follow suit.

Bio-based resins offer recyclable future for 3D printing

Researchers from the University of Birmingham have designed a new type of photocurable resin that offers two key benefits over existing 3D printing resins: it is made entirely from bio-sourced materials, and can be 3D printed, recycled and then printed again. While current 3D printing usually relies on epoxies or acrylics, which come mostly from petrochemical feedstock, the new resin is

made from lipoic acid, a naturally occurring fatty acid molecule that is 100% bio-sourced and commonly sold as a dietary supplement. Additionally, the recyclability of conventional resins is still limited, because they rely on irreversible bonds created when the resin cures (hardens), and this poses challenges when the material needs to be recycled. In contrast, the resin designed by the Birmingham team can be printed, then broken

back down to its constituent parts, recycled and reprinted, with the addition of just a small amount of photoinitiator to maintain the material’s curable properties, meaning 3D printed products can be recycled in an almost fully closed-loop system. The new resin is compatible with light-initiated printing techniques such as DLP, SLA or by direct ink write, or inkjet printing, and provides high fidelity, with resolution down to 0.05mm.

The researchers who invented the resin were led by Professor Andrew Dove from Birmingham’s School of Chemistry. They have shown the resin can complete two ‘recycles’, and anticipate further recycling is possible, meaning the material could be used in sustainable packaging, industries that do rapid prototyping, optical and electronic devices, construction and architecture, or fashion and jewellery.

Zebra delivers solution for DPD drivers

Zebra Technologies Corporation has announced that delivery drivers for DPD Deutschland GmbH are reliably scanning up to 1,000 parcels a day with help from Zebra’s mobile devices. DPD uses Zebra’s all-in-one TC77 mobile computer for all data scans in short-distance transport, helping it keep pace with demand by optimising its logistics. “Our handheld devices are put through their paces with drivers scanning up to 1,000 parcels a day, and the rechargeable batteries need to be powerful enough to last the entire day - a smartphone can’t do that,” said Rudolf Pöcking, project manager, DPD Deutschland GmbH. “Zebra’s mobile computers are our customer interface for pick-up and delivery, which we selected because of their reliability, durability and long-lasting battery life.” DPD transports some 400 million parcels worldwide every year. DPD’s growth curve has been steep, and it needed a digital solution to further improve efficiency, productivity and transparency in parcel delivery. IBM, as a supplier for DPD and Zebra Premier Solution

Partner, managed the implementation of Zebra’s mobile computers and the deployment of the custom software from DPD, ensuring a smooth and fast rollout. “Zebra mobile computers are purpose- built for frontline users and designed for ease of use, reliability, and ruggedness,” said Alexander Honigmann, director, Manufacturing, T&L and Government, DACH, Zebra Technologies. “This collaboration showcases how companies can meet the demands of e-commerce, and we’re proud to help DPD improve its operational efficiency and enhance its customer service.” DPD developed an app to capture data using QR and barcode technology and installed it on about 14,000 devices to increase driver productivity and visibility into parcel deliveries. Drivers can add their own notes to a particular delivery, such as how many parcels were delivered, if any were damaged or where packages were deposited if the recipient was absent. The delivery vehicles are also equipped with Zebra charging cradles.

Print environmental data gap hinders progress towards corporate sustainability targets

Quocirca’s Print Sustainability Trends Report 2024 reveals that IT decision-makers' expectations of print suppliers are higher than ever as they aim to reduce the environmental footprint of print in their business. Regulatory pressure, stakeholder expectations and the need to increase operational efficiency are the three key factors driving efforts to cut impact. The study also reveals businesses increasingly link sustainability to commercial performance, with 59% expecting that sustainability will be extremely important to business performance by 2026. Quocirca’s study, conducted among 560 IT decision-makers from the UK, US, France and Germany, found that 78% of IT decision-makers now say it is important that their supplier monitors the environmental impact of their print environment, an increase from 65% in 2023 and rising to 86% among C-level executives, indicating the extent of executive focus on this topic. However, respondents also show concern about the transparency and accuracy of the data they receive from print suppliers. In addition, 83% of decision-makers say it is important that they get environmental data on the print infrastructure – a figure that rises to 93% among C-level executives. However, the lack of environmental data available on printers and MFPs is cited as the second biggest challenge associated with reducing environmental impact after cost. Concerns about greenwashing have also risen considerably in the past year. In addition, 28% of respondents said it is a major challenge of reducing the environmental impact of printing, moving it from sixth place in the list of challenges to third. “Organisations are exhibiting increasing focus on reducing environmental impact – especially at the most senior level,” said Quocirca’s CEO Louella Fernandes. “They want data but don’t feel that it is easily accessible, and they are alert to greenwashing. Vendors therefore have a dual challenge – first to provide the data at the level required, and second to build customer trust that it is evidenced and accurate.” Energy efficiency has grown in importance and is the top product selection factor for

sustainability, rising from 27% in 2023 to 38% in 2024. Sustainable consumables and device longevity are the joint second most common considerations, important for 33% in each case. “As customers increasingly focus on environmental reporting requirements, getting accurate information about emissions and impact grows in importance,” noted Louella. “Technology providers such as print vendors, MPS providers and channel partners can play a pivotal role in enabling organisations to effectively track and manage their scope 3 emissions. “Vendors are also demonstrating their commitment to circularity, with several offering product life extension options or longer initial design life. By doing this, vendors contribute to reducing electronic waste and lowering the environmental impact of technology production and disposal.” Just 14% of respondents rank remanufactured devices in their top three considerations for reducing print environmental impact. Meanwhile 19% consider refurbished devices important. Awareness of the availability of these devices is high, with 57% of respondents saying they know their manufacturer offers refurbished devices and 49% aware that they offer remanufactured devices. Together, this indicates that their role in a more sustainable print environment has yet to be realised. Louella added: “Vendors are stepping up their remanufacturing and refurbishing programmes, with several manufacturers offering certified ‘as-new’ products back to market. This has yet to influence buyers, however, as interest in such products has stayed consistently low. However, with regulations such as France’s anti-waste law focusing on promoting the circular economy, including refurbished devices, it is an area that we expect to see growing in the short- to medium-term. “The findings from this year’s Quocirca Print Sustainably Trends Study underline the need for more education around print sustainability, with clear and transparent data provision, robust reporting and rigorous monitoring all important to help customers achieve sustainability goals.”

RICOH-AGILICO DEVICE REFURBISHMENT PROGRAMME

Forward together With sustainability issues continuing to become more important for businesses of all sizes, practices such as printer refurbishment are gaining in popularity. To this end, Ricoh has formed a partnership with Agilico to refurbish and resell used devices.

The recent COP29 summit in Azerbaijan has put environmental issues back to the top of the news agenda. But while nations are thrashing out how they can help reduce CO2 emissions and try to stem the march of climate change, there are many businesses at a smaller level trying to become more sustainable – and there are an increasing number of programmes available to help with this. One practice that is gaining in popularity is device refurbishment. Many office devices, including printers, are dispensed with, or upgraded, before they have reached the end of their useful life – indeed, some have used less than 10% of their capacity and have plenty of life left in them. To this end, Ricoh has partnered with Agilico, a business that specialises in providing digital solutions and services, particularly in document management, print management and office technology, to refurbish and resell used devices, including printers. Rowan Jeffreys-Hoar, director, partner channel at Ricoh UK, says there a growing demand from customers for refurbished options for printers and other devices. “This solution was created to fulfil the increasing customer desire for market-leading printing technology while also supporting the Agilico Zero mission by extending the lifecycle of our technology,” he says.

Rowan Jeffreys-Hoar director, partner channel

One big problem currently is that 70% of end-of-life devices in the UK are exported, increasing carbon emissions, explains Warren Colby, managing director of the Agile Print Division at Agilico Workplace Technology. “By refurbishing and harvesting usable parts and recycling what can’t be reused through our accredited partners, we minimise electronic waste going to landfill and extend the life of devices, supporting environmental goals and cost-effective solutions," he says. Meticulous process Rowan explains the refurbishment process that Ricoh and Agilico have in place. “Refurbishment is a meticulous process that we take great pride in,” he says. “It all starts with our dedicated team, which gathers used devices and puts them through a rigorous

inspection and testing phase. We make a point to use only genuine parts for any repairs needed because we're committed to nothing but top quality. Then, the devices get a thorough cleaning, and we update them with the latest software. “Before we even think about re-releasing them to the market, they're tested all over again. Because, at the end of the day, we're all about providing the customers with dependable and sustainable options they can always count on.” Warren adds: “Across our nationwide network of refurbishment centres, our expert engineers are at the core of refurbishing our Agilico Zero range of MFDs. With decades of experience, they transform lightly used machines into 'as new' devices. “The process involves a detailed inspection of more than 30 key components, sanitising all hard drive data, replacing worn parts, and rigorously testing every function. After a final quality check, the device is ready for an ‘as new’ life, with zero compromise in quality or reliability.” Refurbishment vs remanufacturing There are differences between refurbishment and remanufacturing, and these are important to note. “A refurbished printer is a lightly used device restored to 'as new' condition,” explains Rowan. “This involves a full breakdown of the device, replacement of components where necessary, software updates, and thorough testing. “It provides the same performance as a new printer but at a lower environmental and financial cost. A remanufactured printer is typically a refurbishment by the manufacturer, which may use a mix of recycled and new parts.” Achieving sustainability goals Sustainability is key in the thinking for this programme, and, as Rowan explains, the programme could save a significant amount of CO2. “Through the Agilico Zero programme, at least 500kg of CO2 emissions are avoided for each refurbished device; this is achieved by extending its life and reducing the need for new manufacturing,” he says. “In addition, we avoid the environmental impact of

transporting devices overseas, which also helps reduce carbon emissions. “But CO2 savings are just one part of the picture. E-waste (WEEE) is the fastest growing waste stream globally, and through this programme we can significantly reduce the amount of WEEE entering landfill. “At Ricoh, we have robust processes and partnerships in place to ensure that none of our products or packaging enter landfills. In fact, our UK operations are ‘zero to waste landfill’ and we’re very proud of that.” Using refurbished devices can help end users to achieve their sustainability and ESG goals too. “Refurbished devices provide the opportunity for a ‘new lease of life’ and significantly reduce the amount of waste,” says Rowan. “They lessen the need and supply of brand new devices, consequently lowering the requirement for natural and manufactured resources like metal, glass, plastics and earth minerals, as well as additional packaging. All this positive environmental impact can be achieved without compromising on reliability of this technology, and customers often comment on how seamless the process is.” Warren adds that choosing refurbished devices helps businesses lower their carbon footprint and avoid unnecessary waste. “Agilico Zero offers a sustainable and lower- cost alternative for businesses to support the circular economy," he says. While Warren appreciates that this approach requires a shift in mindset, he is confident that the arguments for it outweigh perceived barriers. “We understand the challenge of shifting traditional approaches, but the

CONTINUED environmental benefits, combined with the ability to extend the life of lightly used devices, make it the right decision for clients and suppliers alike,” he says. Agilico itself is practicing what it preaches, and the business has targets to become net zero by 2030. “We are leading with our Agilico Zero product range, offering sustainable solutions that extend the life of lightly used devices and avoid at least 500kg of carbon per unit,” he says. “While the shift comes with challenges, we approach them with an agile and innovative mindset. In addition to refurbishing devices, we generate power through solar panels and have transitioned almost 100% of our car fleet to electric or hybrid vehicles. This, along with reducing energy consumption and promoting the circular economy, ensures we continue to make positive environmental impacts that are rewarding for employees and clients.” Long-term partnership Ricoh and Agilico’s partnership is nothing new. Rowan says that the partnership between the companies was formed more than two decades ago. “It is based on a shared desire to prioritise and support our customers' needs and ESG commitments,” he adds. “We work together beyond the traditional supplier/vendor setup – it is a true partnership with Ricoh playing a role beyond simply supplying Agilico with technology. I am delighted that we’re able to help Agilico achieve their ambitious net zero goals through this project.” Making an impact Rowan has high hopes for the programme and the impact it can make. “Through the Agilico Zero programme, we hope to give thousands of multifunctional devices a new lease of life,” he says. “By extending the life of these barely used machines, we aim to significantly reduce electronic waste and contribute to a truly circular economy – one of the key pillars of our ESG strategy.” “Our objective to reduce our environmental impact (CO²e) to net-zero GHG by 2050 includes the entire life-cycle scope of all Ricoh products and services, so the ‘upstream’ (supplier-related) and ‘downstream’ (end-user- related) aspects are fundamental areas of impact and influence.” Through this partnership and many more, Ricoh finds ways to collaborate with its partners to help across their net zero

journeys. As a leader in the workplace technology sector, it recognises the impact its activities have on the environment. Increasing popularity While device refurbishment has been an option for some years, as mentioned its popularity has really begun to grow in recent years as more businesses become aware of the need to increase their sustainability. As environmental concerns continue to grow, then the popularity of refurbishment should do too in the coming years. “As businesses face growing environmental and economic challenges, device refurbishment will be crucial,” says Warren. “At Agilico, we’ve embraced this shift, recognising that extending the life of barely used devices is the right thing to do. “The narrative and reasoning for change are essential as more companies adopt sustainability practices. Refurbishment not only helps reduce electronic waste and carbon emissions but also provides opportunities to adapt and innovate, making it a key element in future business strategies.”

range that means customers can choose the product that best meets its needs.

Security Security is also a priority as it is well known that badly secured printers can provide an access point for cyber criminals. Arivia products are built with comprehensive security measures that integrate seamlessly into any office environment. Arivia MFPs are fitted with TPM 2.0 chips, IP address filtering and has SSD encryption as standard, according to Quocirca. Katun’s MFPs are developed to safeguard sensitive information and ensure secure document handling through hard drive encryption and network protection, providing customers with reassurance that their business is protected from potential security threats. Sustainability Katun has long been dedicated to making offices greener, and this commitment is evident in the Arivia MFPs. In partnership with PrintReleaf™, Katun’s Print It, Plant It program makes it easy for customers to contribute to global reforestation. When an Arivia MFP is bought and print monitoring is set up through an authorised Arivia dealer, a tree will be planted for every 8,333 pages that are printed. This helps users to help offset the environmental impact of their printing. However, participation in this program is optional. In addition, Katun has designed the Arivia line to be low on power consumption – only components necessary for an activity are activated, for instance. With Katun’s long-established reputation in the industry, it means that customers are often already aware of the brand, which will help when resellers are talking to them about the products.
