Intelligence led
Artificial intelligence is making an impact in various aspects of business technology and printers are no exception. The benefits are becoming clear – but it is up to resellers to extol these to their customers.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is permeating increasing parts of everyone’s lives. For instance, many of us will have interacted with chatbots now when dealing with utilities, banking or insurance providers. Or perhaps you will have had the AI- generated spam phone calls trying to get your details for nefarious purposes. AI is also helping people in businesses. Some even think it could end up replacing
print security solutions into educational establishments. Read more on p46. Another high priority for many businesses is sustainability. While printer manufacturers have been producing increasingly efficient devices in terms of energy and resource usage, there have also been advancement in the sustainability of the consumables they use. For instance, ink cartridges that can be recycled and/ or are made at least in part from recycled materials. These can make a difference for businesses looking to be more

increasingly clear. Benefits include better tracking of how resources are used, predictive
maintenance and using algorithms to analyse frequently completed tasks to then produce one-touch shortcuts for users to name but three. But many business owners are at the beginning of their AI journey, and resellers need to be there to guide them through it and provide solutions for them. Read more on p31. AI is also having an impact on device security and will continue to in the coming months and years as the technology continues to develop at a rapid pace. Most people are aware of this but print security can still be sometimes overlooked. In our feature focusing on print security in the education sector, we explore the unique considerations of the sector that resellers must be aware of when they are selling printers and

Fujifilm’s Broadstairs ink manufacturing site receives certification
Fujifilm’s Broadstairs ink manufacturing site has received ‘Zero to Landfill’ certification from Valpak, a provider of environmental compliance and recycling solutions. The factory manufactures high performance inks for a range of markets, including Uvijet wide format UV inkjet inks, and Sericol screen inks. The company has steadily implemented new systems, technologies and processes at the site to monitor and measure its progress, as it takes steps to further reduce its environmental impact. The Valpak certification is a significant milestone that confirms the site is sending zero packaging, production or hazardous waste to landfill. It also highlights the company’s commitment to continuously improving its waste management through reducing, recycling and reusing resources. The certification process involved a comprehensive audit, carried out by Valpak, of Fujifilm’s waste management practices on site, including its waste and recycling initiatives. During the audit, Fujifilm demonstrated how it is measuring and monitoring a range of key
performance indicators, including: l Waste in each department is properly and responsibly disposed of in the correct bins l Hazardous waste containers are sealed, once full, and removed by the onsite waste management team l Balers are used for plastic polythene and cardboard l The canteen has separate bins for metal cans, coffee cups, food and general waste l Food waste is composted l Mixed recycling bins in place across the site. Importantly, Fujifilm records its waste data via an online system to measure and improve its practices. Paul Dannahy, goods team leader at the site in Broadstairs, played a key role in identifying waste processing companies which allowed Fujifilm to move waste from incineration to recycling centres, and in other areas, generate value from the waste. For example, pallets were broken down into pellets for fuel. The pellets were then sent away from the site, sold and reused in other applications.

Fujifilm proved from 1 April, 2023 to 31 March, 2024 that in addition to sending zero waste to landfill, it achieved a recycling rate of 53.64%. In addition to increasing the amount of waste being recycled, Fujifilm also reduced the overall waste being produced. “We are honoured to receive ‘Zero to Landfill’ certification from Valpak,” said Paul. “It’s a testament to our team’s dedication to reducing our environmental impact and promoting a circular economy.” Craig Milsted, sustainability advisor at Fujifilm Speciality Ink Systems, Broadstairs,
added: “Looking forward, we are confident that we can continue to make iterative improvements all over the site, across all areas of energy, waste and water reductions, to maintain our position as an award-winning, world-class and sustainable factory.” Bronwynn Harris, waste & resource traceability consultant at Valpak, said the company was “delighted” to certify the site. “The company’s commitment to sustainability and the team’s proactive approach to waste management serve as an exemplary model for other companies to follow,” she added.
Document digitisation brought to SL Environmental
Konica Minolta Business Solutions (UK) Ltd and its managed print partner Paradigm Business Solutions Ltd have delivered SL Environmental Ltd with a document digitalisation solution that addresses its paper document storage needs, while ensuring full data security and rapid retrieval. The nationwide specialist asbestos removal and surveying contractor can generate up to 1,000 document pages for a single project, which the company is required to retain for 40 years. Consequently, the company had accumulated 200 filing cabinets full of paper documentation. To overcome the physical storage and document retrieval challenges faced by SL Environmental, Paradigm recommended Konica Minolta’s bizhub C360i multifunctional print device (MFD) in combination with the Filestar Document Management software, to begin a new process of document digitisation. Today, new documents are scanned and
securely stored in a single cloud-based repository, reducing the need to retain paper. The SL Environmental team can search and retrieve documents in minutes using keywords, tags or metadata, instead of trawling through filing cabinets. “The results have exceeded our expectations, and we are thrilled with the positive impact on our business,” said Sean O’Leary, managing director of SL Environmental. “This has provided us with an approach that perfectly aligns with what we needed, delivering much-needed efficiency and importantly, peace of mind.” Rob Carey, director at Paradigm Business Solutions, added: “Because of its close partnership with Filestar, Konica Minolta’s MFDs are perfectly suited to work with this powerful but easy-to-use software. This is ideal for a business such as SL Environmental where the small team must be time-efficient in effectively processing documentation.”

At the forefront of label innovation
Barcode labelling and linerless labelling are becoming more important to a wide range of industries, and TSC Auto ID is at the forefront of this, providing innovative solutions for its global customers.
With businesses in a range of sectors looking for better labelling for products, there is an emphasis, like never before, on the devices used. Manufacturers such as TSC Auto ID are responding to this need with a range of innovative devices. TSC offers a range of innovative thermal label printing solutions. Its barcode label printing solutions include mobile, desktop, industrial, and enterprise-grade barcode label printers, RFID printers, integrated barcode label inspection systems, print engines, advanced printer software, standard and custom labels, and ribbons. The company specialises in providing reliable, high quality label printing solutions to move products efficiently through the supply chain. Accurate and durable Two sectors that particularly demand accurate and durable labels are healthcare and logistics. “In healthcare, incorrect labels can lead to serious medical errors, compromising patient safety,” says Michelle Hu, director of product management at TSC Auto ID. “When hospital staff check patients at their bedside or collect samples from patients at the point of care, mobility and timely label printing are also essential. “In addition, mobile printers align with the “on-the-go” nature of logistics operations, specific requirements may vary based on the working scenarios or environments. “Misprinted labels can cause delivery delays, lost shipments and operational inefficiencies. Maintaining label integrity ensures compliance, traceability and the smooth flow of operations.” TSC ensures label integrity with thermal printing by using high-quality durable label materials and strong adhesives that can withstand moisture, chemicals and temperature changes. Its printers also use advanced technology to generate long-lasting labels and ensure high-
resolution printing for clear barcodes and text. “These help to ensure that thermal-printed labels in healthcare and logistics remain accurate, durable and reliable throughout their journey,” claims Michelle. Mobile label printing Demand for mobile label printing is growing, in not just the logistics and healthcare sectors, but also in others such as retail. “This is due to its flexibility, efficiency and support for real- time operations,” says Michelle. “It enables on-the-go labelling, reducing errors and increasing productivity.” TSC offers a range of lightweight, durable mobile printers with long battery life for extended field use, with labels made from durable materials and adhesives suited to various surfaces and conditions. Also, its mobile printers have reliable wireless connectivity (Bluetooth, Wi-Fi) and integrate seamlessly with mobile devices and enterprise device management systems. TSC’s mobile printers have been designed with intuitive interfaces and comprehensive development kits, while the company offers training and support for easy implementation. Changing trends “While we can already meet the growing demand for mobile label printing, we’re also alive to changing trends and customer needs.

We know, for instance, that customers want greater integration with mobile devices, to deliver more flexibility and cost-effectiveness,” says Michelle. “Customers also want cloud-based solutions for real-time data access and scalability, and AI integration for improved decoding accuracy. “There is also greater demand for advanced imaging technology with enhanced accuracy and 2D barcode adoption. “Rugged designs for devices suitable for harsh environments are also increasingly desired by customers.” TSC has plenty of developments in the pipeline too, such as the increasing adoption of augmented reality (AR), which can enhance user experience and training. There is also a greater focus on sustainability. “There is a push towards eco-friendly materials and energy efficiency,” as well as extending mobile device life cycles to meet eco-design and eco-friendly practices,” says Michelle. Enhanced connectivity will also be a priority going forward, including enhanced WIFI security and IoT integration for better performance, adds Michelle. Linerless labelling Linerless labelling is becoming increasingly important for many businesses, especially those that prioritise sustainability and cost efficiency. It offers a range of benefits. “For instance, it eliminates the need for backing liners, not only reducing waste and lowering carbon footprints but also making for cleaner and safer workspaces,” notes Michelle. “It offers greater flexibility too in that the variable length labels allow for different label sizes from the same roll, reducing waste. “There are also cost savings as there are more labels per roll, which means fewer
roll changes and reduced shipping and storage costs. “This translates to less downtime. Fewer roll changes and faster label application increase productivity.” Demand for linerless labelling is growing in a range of sectors. “In retail, linerless labels are used for price tags, shelf labels, and promotional stickers,” says Michelle. “Being able to print labels of variable lengths without waste is particularly appealing in high-volume labelling. “In logistics and transportation, linerless labels are used extensively for shipping, inventory tracking, and barcode labelling, as they can be easily adapted to different sizes and requirements. “Meanwhile in food and beverage, they are used widely for labelling products in grocery stores, delis, and bakeries, ensuring compliance with food safety regulations. The flexibility to print labels of varying lengths is hugely beneficial for packaging different sizes, especially fresh produce and ready-to- eat meals. “In healthcare, linerless labels are used for labelling medications, patient records, laboratory samples and medical devices, enhancing accuracy and traceability. The absence of a liner reduces the risk of contamination and waste, which is crucial in medical settings.” Future of linerless Michelle claims the future of linerless label printing looks promising, driven by several key trends. One is the growing demand for sustainability: “As eco-friendly solutions become a top priority for businesses across industries, the demand for linerless label printers will continue to grow,” she says. “Companies are increasingly seeking ways to

reduce waste and their environmental impact, making linerless labels an attractive option. “Governments and organisations are also likely to impose stricter environmental regulations, further driving the adoption of sustainable labelling solutions like linerless printing.” Sustainability Reduced environmental impact is something that many companies are looking for in their label printing solutions. Part of this involves printers that can print labels in a range of sizes, suggests Michelle. “Such flexibility allows them to optimise label usage, reduce waste, and improve efficiency, all of which align with sustainable practices,” she says. “By adopting these versatile printing solutions, companies can advance their sustainability goals while maintaining operational efficiency. “Our products help businesses meet their sustainability goals in several ways, such as energy efficiency. Our thermal printers are designed to consume less power compared to traditional printers. Features like standby mode and power-saving settings help reduce energy consumption. “Our thermal printers also enable companies to minimise waste by using fewer consumables, like our ribbon saving feature on print and apply solutions, or offering linerless label options, which eliminates the need for backing paper. Precision cutting technology also ensures optimal use of label materials, reducing offcuts. “Thermal printers produce durable labels that can withstand various environmental conditions, reducing the need for reprinting and thus conserving resources,” offers Michelle. TSC becoming more sustainable But it isn’t just about helping its customers reduce their environmental impact, TSC Auto ID is also committed to becoming more sustainable in its own processes. “We have established concrete sustainability strategies and goals for our products and business operation,” says Michelle. “We strive to achieve environmental sustainability and are moving forward towards green manufacturing, green supply chains and green products. “As an example, we use renewable, recycled materials in product design to reduce environmental impact. By 2026, we aim to incorporate an additional 10% recycled material in printer components. “We also use recyclable packaging materials
such as FSC-certified paper cartons to reduce waste and environmental impact. `Our aim is that, by 2026, 100% of our packaging will made from recycled or recyclable materials.” Michelle also highlighted that several TSC printers are designed to consume less energy during use, such as a power saving mode feature or ‘Entergy Star’ certification compliance. Sustainable design TSC products are designed with durability and longevity in mind, so they last longer in the field, which helps reduce waste. Likewise, its printers have modular and repairable designs, making them easy to repair, upgrade or recycle, which can extend their lifecycles and reduce the need for replacement. TSC uses sustainable manufacturing practices, having invested in energy-efficient machinery and processes. It implements processes to reduce, reuse and recycle waste generated during manufacturing and works with suppliers that prioritise sustainability, ensuring raw materials are sourced ethically and sustainably. This is reinforced by its corporate social responsibility (CSR) policies, which are dedicated to creating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace to achieve its ‘Better Me, Better TSC’ objective. “Specific initiatives in this area include employee communication, employee care and human rights policy establishment,” says Michelle. Sustainability is becoming increasingly crucial for organisations. Companies are recognising that sustainable practices are not only important for environmental stewardship but also for long-term business success. “We set sustainability goals and transparently communicate progress to stakeholders, and regularly measure and report on our sustainability status,” she concludes. PRODUCT LAUNCH BROTHER DESKTOP MONO RANGE
Life in mono With many offices downsizing and workforces increasingly working in disparate locations, the appetite for small mono laser printers is increasing – and Brother UK’s latest product launches look to address this market.
While some employers are now mandating that employees return to the office full- time, many are happy to maintain hybrid arrangements and have even downsized their offices as a result. This means that demand for compact printers that maintain high quality output is increasing. Into this market, Brother UK has recently launched a compact range of mono laser printers for businesses, helping resellers to support customers with downsized offices and decentralised workforces. Quality in compact format The professional desktop range of mono laser printers includes the HL-L2865DW, MFC- L2960DW and MFC-L2980DW. The three new devices are designed to offer businesses the quality and performance of a large enterprise model, in a compact unit. The HL-L2865DW weighs 7.1kg, and the MFC-L2960DW and MFC-L2980DW both weigh 12.4kg, with every component optimised to reduce overall machine size, helping businesses make the most of their office space without compromising on performance. Sustainability With sustainability a top priority for
businesses, Brother UK has taken that into account with its new printers. “Recycling is playing a greater role in helping customers cut their waste and emissions,” says Terry. “Businesses can return their used toner and ink cartridges to us free-of-charge for remanufacturing at our specialist facility in Ruabon, North Wales, where our operations are helping save 5,300 tonnes of CO2 each year through this process.” Growing demand Terry says that demand for compact printers is growing as firms remodel their offices to retain and attract talent in a competitive labour market. “For some, this means freeing- up more space for breakout and lounge areas, for example, and so many are looking at how they can downsize their devices without compromising on quality,” he says. “Our new professional desktop range of mono laser printers are quiet, compact and cost-effective, but still deliver the benefits of the high-performance business model with high image quality, speed and connectivity. This makes them a perfect fit in professional services firms such as law firms and accountancy practices. They’re also a great fit in education and healthcare, where document management, workflow automation and security are essential, and space is often at a premium.” Support for resellers Terry adds that resellers will play a key role in supporting businesses as they remodel their workspaces
quiet, compact and cost-effective – with the unrivalled quality, speed and connectivity of a high-performance business model. “Minimal maintenance and a robust and durable design enable businesses to be confident the new range meets the demands of a busy workplace. We’re also seeing firms refreshing how they procure and manage technology, with an increasing demand for subscription and contractual printing. Having the new range available with MPS options, will help partners to maximise their customers’ productivity, efficiency and sustainability.” Terry adds that with Brother UK’s dedicated nationwide channel sales teams, the company can support resellers every step of the way when targeting new opportunities for print. “From working with them to identify their customers’ needs and wants, installing devices and providing ongoing maintenance support,” he says. “Plus, our BrotherZone partner portal offers specialist training guides, videos and toolkits so that partners are equipped with all the expertise to support customers’ every need. MPS savings Channel partners can also offer customers cost savings, with the new devices available under a managed print service (MPS) agreement. “We’re also seeing customers increasingly turning to MPS, and it’s through MPS that firms can maximise the benefits to productivity and cost-efficiency,” says Terry. “We recently launched three distinct offerings – Essential, Professional and Enterprise – that are available across the new range and tailored to businesses of different sizes to help resellers tap into this demand.”

PRODUCT LAUNCH KYOCERA ECOSYS MA4000WIFX SERIES
Cost effective productivity
Kyocera has launched its ECOSYS MA4000wifx series for cost-effective, secure and sustainable printing, which is aimed at a wide range of businesses.
Security and sustainability are watchwords for many businesses now when they are looking to refresh or add to their print fleet. With this to the fore, Kyocera Document Solutions UK has introduced the ECOSYS MA4000wifx series, a lineup of two A4 monochrome printers and three multifunction devices (MFPs) – the ECOSYS MA4000wifx, MA4000fx, ECOSYS MA4000x, ECOSYS PA4000wx and ECOSYS PA4000x – tailored for small workgroups and businesses seeking secure, compact and efficient printing options. The devices build upon Kyocera's ECOSYS philosophy of sustainable and cost-effective printing solutions, using long-life components to reduce waste and minimise the need for frequent replacements. Kyocera’s latest devices are set to replace the ECOSYS P2040dn and ECOSYS P2040dw models, as well as the ECOSYS M2040dn, ECOSYS M2540dn and ECOSYS M2640idw.
Range of settings The MA4000wifx devices are well-suited for various settings. The compact footprint of these devices allows them to be positioned under or on top of a counter, or in a small back office. The MA4000wifx can integrate with Kyocera’s HyPAS software platform and offers easy touch-screen operations to ensure print workflows are as efficient as possible. “The compact size, performance and affordability, especially their very low running costs make the MA4000wifx Series favourites with many businesses in retail, hotels, warehouses, builders’ merchants and wholesalers big and small, printing letters, dispatch notes, purchase orders and invoices,” says Peter Dresser, product marketing manager, Kyocera Document Solutions UK. “The fully featured MFPs incorporate many high productivity features including dual scanning document feeders, automatic paper size detection, crop, centre and text correction to guaranteeing excellent results with minimum effort. As with the printers their high quality black and white printing make them perfect for use as personal or general office devices, up to 30 users. “The top of the range MA4000wifx model boasts a 4.3” colour touch panel and HyPAS™ functionality for easy integration with print management software such as Kyocera’s ‘Kyocera Cloud Print and Scan’ solution. “All devices in the MA4000wifx Series are also capable of prescription printing making them ideal for mission critical applications seen in the NHS and Doctors’ surgeries.” In addition, the new printers offer improved compatibility with cloud-based services such as Kyocera Cloud Print, and third-party print solutions such as Universal Print by Microsoft, ensuring seamless integration into existing IT infrastructures. This enhanced compatibility is an excellent fit for businesses looking to develop a secure print environment while supporting hybrid work models.

businesses, and to this end the MA4000wifx Series has K-Level security on board to keep sensitive data safe from unauthorised access and an option to add a Trusted Platform Module (UG-50) for an extra layer of protection. Plus, with support for Kyocera's mobile printing solutions, the devices make it easy to print from smartphones and tablets, helping teams
stay productive wherever they are. “This is Kyocera’s highest level of
“With the introduction of the MA4000wifx Series, Kyocera has worked hard to help businesses fulfil their ESG targets. We have increased the recycled plastic content of the devices by 5%, more than 99% of the plastics they are made from can be recycled, 100% for the toner cartridge. We have reduced ‘Sleep Mode’ power consumption to an industry low 0.3 Watts (0.4 Watts on MFPs) reducing the typical electricity consumption values by as much as 23% compared to the products they replace. “Environmental impact is further reduced with Kyocera’s award-winning pulp material packaging.” Peter adds that the new devices incorporate Kyocera’s long-life technology to keep user interventions, running costs and environmental impact to the minimum. “Machine life is 200,000 pages or five years, whichever comes first,” he says. “Each device is supplied with 3,600 pages of toner free in the box and an image drum designed to last 100,000 pages. Replacement toner is an impressive 10,000 pages, priced to keep running costs very low as the less you replace, the lower your environmental impact.” Keeping costs low Keeping running costs low has also been a focus for Kyocera with these new devices. “A low total cost of ownership (TCO) is very important to all our customers and a core value of Kyocera’s product design philosophy,” says Peter. “This is achieved using Kyocera’s industry leading, long-life technology. The standard replacement toner on the MA4000wifx Series is 10,000 pages and tends to be priced close to the standard replacement toner pricing of the competitors’
security which offers customers optimal data protection out of the box,” says Peter. “Printers and MFPs can act as entry point to a customer’s network, we call these endpoints and older devices, or those with not such robust security, may be more vulnerable – in effect leaving an open door for hackers to access business sensitive data.” Sustainability Sustainability is also an increasingly important consideration, not just for public sector, blue light and corporate customers but also small business and home user customers. “They have always seen the benefits of Kyocera’s long-life technology in the low running costs and reduced environmental impact our devices have,” says Peter. “However, they are now looking deeper, they want to know what the environmental impact was of producing a device, what resources were used, how much energy was used in production and how much energy will continue to be used throughout its life. All items with environmental impact that can help them to demonstrate their commitment to responsible practices and have a positive impact on their environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals. “For example, Kyocera Document Solutions UK is a Carbon Neutral company. Buyers can be confident that the MA4000wifx Series is launched Carbon Neutral, as we have done with all product launches since January 2023. We partner with MyClimate to offset the carbon emissions from the production and transportation of each device together with the consumables they use over their standard rated lifetime of five years.
