CONFIDENTIAL SHREDDING FOR HYBRID WORKERS

Cut to the chase With many office-based employees working at home regularly on a long-term basis, they often have confidential documents in their possession – and these must be disposed of properly when necessary by shredding, which provides opportunities for resellers.

With hybrid working now a long-term trend in this country, office workers expect – and are expected – to do everything they can at home as they can in the office, and this includes handling sensitive documents as and when required. But this also means those documents need to be disposed of properly when they have reached the end of their useful life. The consequences of a data breach from not doing this can be heavy in terms of fines, lost business and reputational damage. This means that confidential shredding is essential for hybrid workers and shouldn’t be overlooked. “Sensitive business and personal documents are still handled at home, so GDPR responsibilities apply just as much as in the office,” notes Annaliese Curtis, trade marketing manager UK & Ireland at Fellowes. “Without secure disposal, information such as account details or client data can be exposed. Having a reliable shredder in the home helps ensure data protection is

maintained day to day.” Victoria Stapley, trade marketing manager – UK & Ireland at ACCO EMEA, agrees confidential shredding is extremely important for hybrid workers. “While many employees focus on setting up their workspace and technology, they can forget that documents printed and handled at home require the same level of protection as those processed in the office,” she says The risk from physical documents remains significant, Victoria adds. “Fraud continues to account for a large proportion of UK crime, and not all fraud is cyber-related,” she says. “Any paperwork containing personal, financial or commercially sensitive information should be securely destroyed once it is no longer needed. As hybrid working means confidential documents may now be handled in multiple locations, secure shredding has become an essential part of protecting data and maintaining compliance.”
